0

In celebration of the one year anniversary of my blog, I decided to give out my awards to my favorite places that I’ve traveled in the world.  In each category, I will give out a gold, silver, and bronze, and also highlight somewhere I’d like to travel to in the future that I suspect might break into the top 3.  I will be revealing one category each day until December 28, the official one year mark of my blog.  Here is the schedule as well as links to the other awards:

December 20: Best Mass Transit
December 21: Best Value
December 22: Best People
December 23: Underrated City
December 24: Best Food
December 25: Best Natural Beauty
December 26: Best Small City
December 27: Best Big City
December 28: Best Country

Ljubljana

Best Small City

Gold: Ljubljana

Arriving in the capital city of Slovenia, I was exhausted from a month and a half of constant travel.  I chose Ljubljana as my next destination simply because I didn’t know anything about it and therefore wouldn’t feel obligated to do anything in particular.  I couldn’t have landed in a better place.  Ljubljana is full of world class street musicians, food, and charm.  There are lovely cobbled streets to stroll down before settling at one of the great cafes.  So much of what’s great in Ljubljana is what’s great about Europe in general.  It’s the simple pleasures of savoring each moment in a perfect day in a nearly perfect place.

Silver: Reykjavik

Speaking of great music, Reykjavik of all places, had the best live music scene I’ve experienced.  Walking down the streets, every pub or cafe seems to have great music streaming out.  The beautiful harbor has a stunning mountainous backdrop.  The food is much better than the rest of Scandinavia (sorry rest of Scandinavia…not my favorite).  Also, one award I’m not doing a post on is for most beautiful people.  Let’s just say Reykjavik would win that one pretty easily.

Bronze: Gimmelwald

I’m not sure I can justify putting Gimmelwald in a category labeled city when they have a population of only 130 people, but it sure deserves recognition.  Situated high in the Swiss Alps with what has to be one of the best views in the world.  Gimmelwald is a town full of charm and not much else.  The local convenience store is unmanned and runs on an honesty system.  There are more livestock than people, but that’s part of the charm.  There are few better places to let the stresses of the real world melt away than Gimmelwald.
